Newborn kangaroo care, worth every mother to know

After the baby is born, if you can have close contact with the mother as soon as possible, it will not only make the baby feel more secure, but also encourage mothers to secrete milk as soon as possible to feed the baby. A medical journal report also shows that skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby should be resumed as soon as possible after delivery, which can reduce the risk of death for premature babies to a certain extent. This so-called "mother-infant skin-to-skin contact" is often referred to as "kangaroo care" in medicine. In recent years, international organizations, including the World Health Organization and UNICEF, have been working to promote kangaroo nursing, and many studies have also proved that kangaroo nursing is very important for the health of premature babies.

What is Kangaroo Care?

In layman's terms, kangaroo nursing means that the mother or father of a premature baby, in a similar way to kangaroos caring for a young child, bares the skin of the premature baby, holds it upright on the mother's or father's chest, and provides him with what he needs. warmth and security. When the premature baby's vital signs return to stable and the weight reaches about 1500g, parents can try kangaroo care for the baby as required by the doctor. This method can persist until the baby's corrected gestational age reaches 40 weeks.

What are the benefits of kangaroo care for premature newborns?

First of all, kangaroo nursing can effectively help the baby to prolong the sleep time and help the secretion of the baby's growth hormone. Secondly, it can stabilize the baby's heartbeat, breathing and blood oxygen concentration; through skin contact with parents, it can reduce the baby's body heat and water loss, save energy, and improve the success rate of breastfeeding. Finally, it can bring a sense of security to the baby, reduce the baby's restlessness and crying, and increase parent-child interaction. When done in the right way, it can also help increase the likelihood that premature babies will be discharged from the hospital early.

How is Kangaroo Care done?

Compared with conventional baby care methods, kangaroo care has higher requirements, which are manifested in the following two aspects.
  • Preparations
There are a few things you need to do to make sure Kangaroo Care goes smoothly. The first is environmental preparation. Choose a space that is safe, warm (that is, the temperature is maintained at 22-24°C), privacy, and noise-free. The second is the preparation of items, including a soft and comfortable sofa, soft music, soft pillows, warm baking lamps, blankets, and ottomans. In addition, nurses should prepare ECG monitors, the purpose is to do a good job of continuous monitoring of premature infants' vital signs. Finally, it is the preparation of parents and their babies. For example, parents should keep sterile, do not wear perfume, maintain a relaxed and happy mood, wear loose cotton tops with front openings, and do not wear necklaces. For mothers, you need to take off the bra; if there is milk overflow, you can prepare a small towel to wipe it; if the father has long chest hair, it needs to be trimmed a little. The baby needs to undress and put on a diaper. It should be noted here that the area covered by the diaper should be reduced as much as possible to expose more skin contact with parents. At the same time, in order to reduce the loss of body temperature of the premature baby, he also needs to wear a small hat. In addition to this, kangaroo care needs to be suspended if the parent has uncomfortable symptoms. For example, if you have some infectious diseases such as cold, fever or gastrointestinal discomfort, so as not to infect the premature baby.
  • Operation method
About the kangaroo care method, it is mainly divided into 4 steps: Step 1 Parents first lean on the sofa and tilt about 60° angle; after adjusting for a comfortable sitting position, leave the top open. Step 2 Adjust to the most comfortable and suitable position for the baby, let the baby sleep on the front of the father or mother in an upright position or at a 60° angle. Step 3 Hold the baby's neck and back with one hand, lift the baby's jaw slightly, use the other arm to support the baby's buttocks, you can cover the baby's back with a small blanket, or wear a hat to strengthen Keep warm. Step 4 Gently turn the baby's head to one side, a position that ensures airway patency and eye contact between mother and baby. Initially, the single time needs to be controlled at about 30 minutes. If the baby's vital signs are stable, it can be extended to 1 hour; if the baby has abnormal symptoms such as facial complexion changes, cool skin, shortness of breath, etc., the nurses need to be informed immediately. Every premature baby is an angel in the world. As parents, we should let the babies truly feel the warmth of the arms of their parents and the sweetness between their relatives. May we all be cared for with love and care for every fragile life.
